Nuance of No

Increasing weight also increases chances of injury. The importance of learning when to back off can literally make or break you. This isn't always as cut and dry as one might believe, because well, Crossfit can be painful. Distinguishing pain from tired muscles and possibly your pansy ass coming back to haunt you, is a learned trait. Generally you learn by getting hurt.

We did push jerks again this morning, and while my back made no protest, after the first round my shoulder was certainly talking. As I came into complete the movement and push up overhead, my shoulder stood up and said "hello!" Not screaming, but with each rep the hello's became more audible and developed an echo. It felt a bit like metal on metal and I couldn't recruit the muscles needed in order to stay steady (it was too busy saying "hi" to me apparently). I dropped it 10lbs to a 65# bar after the second round. There's a slight ego bruise that is accepted when dropping weight due to possible or confirmed injury. Most of us Crossfitters have been conditioned to override most all of our instinctual "shut off" switches, but learning the nuances of when our body sincerely says "no" will help us live to fight harder another day. This is about long term, not 15 minutes of fiery glory followed by a week of mandatory rest. Save that shit for the games, this is practice.

Or, at least, this is what I told myself as one itty, bitty muscle in my right shoulder gently requested me to stop before it showed me who was really in control. I want to be doing this when I'm 70 years old, not reminiscing about it in a lazy boy.

On a completely different topic, this video sums up how I feel today and I have no reason whatsoeverastowhy. I just do.

Maybe your shoulder and my shoulder should date. My right shoulder went from "Hey, you!" a few weeks ago to "Pssst..." recently, but not without a few workouts where pride had to be swallowed and weight had to be lowered.

Take care of your shoulders! You need those things to throw shit around when we celebrate your 80th birthday with some monster workout, bourbon, cigarettes, and pepperoni pizza.

Mel is right: take care of those shoulders! Pain is your body saying "something's not right here!" Listen to it - 'cause it'll force you to one way or another... believe me! Short term annoyance is better than long term pain-in-the-youknowhat!

Austin is going to be one hell of a city filled with hottie 80 year old crossfitters!

Sometimes we have to be proud of ourselves for putting ego aside and listening to those annoying wannabe injuries.
